Over 30's A 1 (0) Shamrock FC 0 (0)
Goal: Marc Daly
Verrazano Sports Complex
Though Shamrock FC have yet to win a match this season, they have only yielded 2 goals/game and so we had an inkling goals might be hard to come by. Indeed, it was only a well-taken effort by Daly midway thru the second half that sealed the victory for Rovers. Shamrocks physical style of play and effective offside trap thwarted Rovers rhythm.
The first half was rather lackluster with Rovers best efforts coming in the first few minutes of play when Bowley tried from long range and a bit later when Peter nicely volleyed a speculative cross. The second half saw Rovers up the tempo with Daly, in particular, and others pushing forward to put some extra pressure on the Shamrock defense. On a subsequent corner, Olli drove the ball in for Carl who solidly headed the ball off the crossbar. Not long after, the ball advanced up the left side where Darren fed Marc at the edge of the 18 yd box. Marc snuck thru two defenders and deftly chipped the keeper who had come off his line.
The remaining ~25 minutes saw Rovers time wasting and Shamrock upping the pressure. They had two excellent chances, one of which Carl cleared off the line after Mike was forced to close down a 1 v 1 situation; the other a volley that was just outside the upper 90. Rovers A, with 1 match in hand, are now 2 points behind league leaders Pele Masters and Guyana B, so we have a chance to leaprog Pele when we face them this Sunday.
