R2D2 undoes Men's Premier for performance of the weekend by Nicolas

R2D2 11 Astoria Dragonflies 0

As R2D2's Sunday opponents, the Astoria Dragonflies were trailing at the very bottom of the League, the question was not if we would win the game but what the margin of victory would be. And what a margin it ended up being. With a final score of 11-0, R2D2 recorded its best score ever and undid the 9-0 of the Men's Rovers Premier team in terms of Rovers' performance of the weekend.
In order to up the ante, R2D2 opted for a resolutely offensive formation with a flat 3 defense at the back and an extra striker up front. From the start of the game, it looked like the strategy would pay off. The very first ball indeed moved quickly up the field in 3 flowing passes which ended up with a clean shot, miraculously caught
by the goalie. During the next 25 minutes, the Astoria goalie and their sweeper would actually prove well above the rest of their team, managing to keep us from scoring despite numerous chances and outrageous domination. At the 25th, Stacy surprised everybody - including herself - with a superb right footed strike from 15 yards out which flew straight into the right corner of the goal. Stacy's first goal with R2D2 proved crucial in freeing us psychologically and giving us a winning way into the game. Emily K and Darlene, then added one each to give us a 3-0 advantage by half time. In the second half, R2D2 focused on playing a one touch passing game using control of the ball, speed and accuracy to create space and open up opportunities. It was definitely a day with for R2D2 as the recipe worked to perfection and we started cashing in goals with frightening efficiency. Within the next 45 minutes, Kerri bagged a hat trick, Kristen build up 2 of her own, Emily added one to her tally, and Caroline reinventing herself as a striker got one too. Add one own goal from Astoria and that is 1 goal every 5 minutes and 20 seconds.
Final score : 11-0.
With this week's win (the 7th in a row), R2D2 ends up the Fall season in first place, tied for points with the Skulls (the Skulls however have one game in hand – a difficult one - which they will play in the Spring) with the best offense of the League (30 goals scored), the best goal difference (25), and the second best defense (5 goals conceded and 6 clean sheets).
The B League has proved of a much higher quality this year than it has been in the past and apart the odd game, every win of R2D2 has been hard fought and thoroughly earned. With a number of teams fighting to move up from their mid table position, the Spring season promises to be very challenging so stay tuned for more…

The Ladies hope to see you all to celebrate the end of the year on the 12th at Nevada Smith.
