BOB - 5 RTG - 1

It's not often that one can describe a 5-1 victory as a struggle, but on Sunday we huffed and puffed and eventually blew the house down of a fairly poor RTG side. No doubt they are massively improved from last season when we stuck 13 past them, but this game was way too close for way too long.
It couldn't have started better. We arrived at sunny Randall's Island to see the closing minutes of Tesoro's 1-1 tie with Shamrocks, placing the destiny of the league back in our own hands. We then kicked off on one of Randalls Island's shiny new fields and were 2-0 in the opening 10 minutes - Luxury & Unmackers with the goals.
And then it all went tits-up. There was a visible slowing of pace and lessening of effort throughout, the Old Boys obviously thinking it was game over and that the goals would flow without further effort. But passes went astray and were not chased down - easier to stand with hands on hips and blame your teammate. Tackles were half-hearted. RTG saw this and took advantage. They were hampered merely by their ability, never their effort. And they were rewarded late in the first half when a ball crossed in from the right was poorly cleared and then poked through Dom’s legs to half the deficit. And whilst they never really threatened to score again, they certainly had their tails up for the rest of the first half.
Second half was a slight improvement, but it wasn’t until late on that we put the game away. Another one from Unmackers and two neat finishes from Jeff gave the scoreline some respectability.
We remain one of just 3 unbeaten teams in the entire Cosmo League, but with four more games left in the season each against much tougher opposition, we’ll have to be far more positive and controlled if we’re to stand a chance of taking the division.
