Once again we played a Guyana Veterans side, this time the A variety, and we had to wait around half an hour until they had enough players to start. With just seven opposing players, we set a record for fastest goal ever when debutant Jazzy, the last piece of the Martino for Robedinho winter transfer, paid immediate dividends, crossing to Adrian who notched his first ever Rovers goal with a clinical finish. Within minutes, Guyana had the full complement including their ageless one, Chris Giles, the former Guyanese national team player. No matter as we quickly notched our second goal when we once again exploited the left side with Jazzy feeding Nedgy for a tap-in. After a couple of missed chances, the next 30 minutes encompassing the end of the first and beginning of the second half saw a much cagier game, however. Guyana began to get forward on the counter-attack and they eventually scored their first when their player got to the byline and crossed to the edge of the 6, where some other dude slotted home. 2-1 at the half.
Guyana came out strong in the second half, forcing Kevin into several diving saves. Also during this spell, Andy, Will and Robbie each made some high quality, last defender tackles to preserve the Rover lead. After weathering the storm, it was Carl who cleared the ball long to Nedgy, who soloed on, slotting past the keeper for his second. A few minutes later on a corner, Nedgy returned the favor, finding Carl at the backpost where he rose high to head home and giving us a three goal cushion. The next goal was probably the nicest with Peter winning the ball in midfield, turning to free Nedgy down the right flank where he again picked out a Rover at the far post, this time Chivon who headed in from the slimmest of angles. Nedgy got his hattrick when Adrian's through ball put him into space with just the keeper to beat, which he calmly did. 6-1 to the good. Guyana netted their second goal just before the final whistle when Rovers briefly lost concentration. Next up it's Dinamo who are the table toppers of the North bracket. Thanks also to guest Stefan for filling in.
