ROVER LADIES NYMWSL TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS
On Sunday, a combined team made of players from Rovers 1 and R2D2 went the whole way to win the NYMWSL A division mini tournament and bring the Cup home.
As the A division in the NYMWSL only had 8 teams playing this year, teh League organized a min tournament to give players a chance to play extra games. To make it more fun, teams where however allowed to combine to create the perfect 11. For Rovers, that meant an opportunity to combined our first and second team and give the players an occasion to have fun together and prove the depth of our ladies' teams. Our opponents of the day were Kickers 1, the Slickers (a combination of the best players of Kickers 2 and the Slackers) and CPR (a combination of both A division CPR teams). Under a bright blue sky the combined Rovers team took to the field at 9 am for an early 3-0 win against CPR. At 11, we went down 1-0 against the Slickers only to win 3-0 against Kickers 1 at 1 pm. The 6 points out of 9 brought us a place in the final and a chance of a rematch against the Slickers. And did we seize the chance. Tables were turned and the Rovers', focused on their game, completely dominated the final and won 2-0. Special kuddos to our star Swedish striker Louise Ostman who scored 5 great goals (making it 13 so far this year with the Rovers), and to Emily B who got 4 fantastic saves in goals and ensured 3 clean sheets out of 4 games. The 3 other Rovers goals were scored by newcomer Farah Aslam, by Bryant Karpinski and by veteran Fran Arcilesi who thereby scored her first ever goal in the NYMWSL in 5 years of playing with the Rovers. As you might have guessed, R2D2 was off this weekend which is why they could take part in the tournament. Next Sunday, we play the Smoking Aces who are third in the League. Should be a great competitive game.
