C.D. Iberia 1 Barnstonworth Rovers F.C. 1
In a very high quality match, the Rovers wasted their chance to stride in the playoffs and take revenge vs Iberia. The Rovers dominated possession, and moved the ball wide with aplomb. They lacked the finishing touch. Iberia made them pay, as usual, in their first foray. Another brilliant free kick to the upper 90.
Rovers 0-1. The Rovers responded and Pugli, finally, got to the end of a Jordi cross to tie it up with a powerful header. Rovers 1-1. Minutes later Iberia were reduced to 10 after a reckless challenge, the 2nd bookable offense. Then, Pugli thought he has tapped in the winner but he was incorrectly ruled offside. Fonzi should have scored but chose to pass it up. Jordi has the initial look at the open net. Now the Rovers will need help to repeat last year’s playoff appearance.
Team: Dave Borchard, Jon Nessa, Oren Nhaissi, Vidar Ekehaug, Sam Wiggins, Jordan Chirico, Andy Abramovits, Mark Kushemba, Einar Benediktsson, Colin Marshall, Stephen Pugliese Subs: (all played) Alfonso Nanclares, Randi Lee, Samuel Minaya

Barnstonworth Old Boys report 3/29 by Sheero
BOB – 1 Argo Silver – 1
So a week after working incredibly hard to overcome the league leaders and put ourselves in contention for the title, we failed to capitalize on our momentum and put in a lackluster performance against the perennially mediocre Argo Silver. Argo have somehow managed to maneuver themselves into 3rd place, but they are a fairly average team that we should beat every day of the week and twice on Sundays (once they’re finally ready to kick-off).
The game’s two goals came from defensive lapses. Bazza latched onto to a poor clearance in the 1st half which left the keeper stranded and slotted home from the top of the box. The equalizer came very fortuitously early in the 2nd half – a pass inside from Dom at right back found the middle ground between Rocco at sweeper and the Argo striker. Rocco did well to get there first, but his sliding clearance only ricocheted off the forward and snuck inside the near post. “Lucky” does not adequately describe it.
As the better team, we should have shrugged the goal off and gone on to win it, but the cohesion of the previous week just wasn’t there. We had 2 or 3 very good chances to finish it off late on, but we were careless with our opportunities in front of goal, and only have ourselves to blame for not bagging the win.
With Tesoro returning to winning ways, the destination of the league title has once again been wrested from our hands unless we can make up a large goal difference deficit. That battle will start in earnest next Sunday when we come up against the division’s whipping boys RTG. Anything but a comprehensive dicking will be unacceptable.
BOB: Mark, Rocco, Greg, Dominator, Uncle Maggie, Scooby, Colin, Bazza, Jeff, FergalOG, Billy Elliot, Luxury, Negro, Unmackers.

Pugli quickly made it 2-0 with a typical finish inside the box, before Sammy finished off the demoralized past league champions for his first, 1st team goal. Rovers 3-0.

Barnstonworth Old Boys result 3/22 by Sheero
BOB – 2 Tesoro SC – 1
The Old Boys kept the destiny of the Over-30s 2nd division in their own hands with a magnificent win over Tesoro yesterday, handing them their first league loss of the season. In a game they simply had to win, BOB battled hard for 90 minutes and deservedly closed the gap to 1 point at the top of the standings.
[“Tesoro” is apparently an Italian term of endearment meaning “loved one”, but there wasn’t much love going on during their post-match debriefing, which was still in session by the time we left Randall’s Island].
Not only was it a fantastic result, but the manner in which it was achieved was quite spectacular…
A 14-strong squad arrived at one of Randall’s Island’s new grass fields and found that although the surface was pretty good, the field itself was short and very narrow. This would hamper our game, as early on we struggled to find any space to effectively move the ball. It appeared to hand Tesoro the advantage, and they had the lion’s share of possession throughout the first half. Standing-in for yours truly (yes, yet another injury), keeper Mark Artis was mostly a spectator though as our tight midfield and back line restricted the opposition to long range potshots, most of which went well high and wide. Sub Colin, was kept busy retrieving the ball from about 40 yards behind our goal. At the other end, strikers Unmackers and Negro were having little success, as they became more and more detached from their own midfielders.
After about 20 minutes, Tesoro took the lead. From a seemingly innocuous position from the top of the box, with his back to goal, one of their strikers was given just too much space, and he managed to fashion an overhead kick which bounced up onto the far post and crept in.
Far from letting our heads drop, we used the goal as a wake-up call and became for more involved in the game. The commitment was never in question, and 50-50 tackles were being won all over the field. Our passing was still suspect though, and the temptation to hit the early long ball often too great, resulting in the opposition coming back at us. Getting close to half-time, we were finally having some joy in the opposition half, with Bazza swinging in a couple of very dangerous corners which gave the Tesoro defense all kinds of trouble.
Just a couple of minutes before half-time, a quick throw in from the right found Unmackers with enough space to turn, look up and deliver a cross into Chip at knee-level, which he beautifully steered in with a side-foot volley into the corner of the net, giving the keeper no chance. 1-1 at the half.
In the opening minutes of the 2nd half it was all Barnstonworth. We put the Tesoro defense under a lot of pressure, and they started to get in tough niggling fouls which the referee blew up for every time. On a couple of occasions, Bazza delivered into the box, but we couldn’t quite get on the end of it. Then, with a free-kick about 25 yards out hit towards the top corner, the keeper managed to get a hand on it and push it onto the bar. The ball dropped down and bounced along the line, somehow staying out. Unmackers followed up but incredibly only managed to hit post and bar. Unusually for him, it was a rare chance in the game as he became more and more isolated up front as Negro dropped deeper into midfield.
Most of the second half was ours, with very few opportunities given up – Rocco and Greg in central defense barely allowing a sniff of the goal, Mark only having to claim a couple of high crosses. As before, the effort and commitment from all 14 players could not be faulted, and we fought late into the game to get the winner. But get it we did, and how…
With just a couple of minutes left, Bazza broke from the half way line and found some space in front of him. Pushing the ball on until he was about 25 yards out, he absolutely marmalized the ball, which was still rising at it hit the back of the net just inside the right post, the keeper barely moving. Great celebrations followed – Rocco said later that it’s been many years since he’s run 50 yards to celebrate a goal. And I must apologize for embarrassing myself in front of the Central Park Rangers players arriving for their game, by running up and down the sidelines screaming like an 8 year old girl. I’m fairly sure I re-injured my ankle too.
The final whistle shortly followed – mission accomplished. I can’t say enough about the effort and belief (including me and Lordy on the sidelines)…

Result: Firsts 3/15/09 vs Pancyprians (h)
Barnstonworth Rovers 1 Pancyprian Freedoms 4
Rovers fought but fell to the league leaders 4-1 in the early start to the spring season. The Rovers fell behind to one of the best goals they have conceded all year. Dos Santos dropped, as always, and on turn chipped the ball to the back of the Rovers defense. The Cypriot winger outpaced Randi and struck a half volley from a ridiculous angle to the opposite upper 90 side netting. Broach Jr never had a chance. Rovers 0-1.
The Rovers, who had the better of play, quickly equalized with an equally impressive manner. A neat buildup of several quick passes, through to midfield, Colin and Einar combined to release Jordi on the right. His swerving cross at the penalty spot, Pugli rose and smashed it to the roof of the net. Rovers 1-1.
2 min later, the Rovers in a carbon copy action, could have taken the lead, but this time Puglie just missed the target. It was the turning point of the match. A miscommunication between Andy and Colin led to a turnover in the Rover defensive third, and the the pancyprians pounced with another clinical finish. Rover 1-2.
In the second half, the Rovers missed another chance to bring the match level, Einar from close range. Bizzarly, another mixup in the Rover line, this time Colin striking Randi’s knee, led to a lose ball inside the area and the match was over. Rovers 1-3.
Pancyprians scored on the last kick of the match as the Rovers push forward to add insult to injury.

Barnstonworth Rovers Res 0 Pancyprian Freedom Res 3
The 10 Reserves valiantly battled vs one of the better sides in the state. And had they converted even a fraction of their chances, they could have celebrated a famous victory. Rather, after 6 wasted tet-a-tets, and 3 open goals from inside the area, when they got the 11th man 20 mins from time, they conceded 2 goals in the final 10 minutes to seal the result. Zach Rubin was brilliant in goal filling in from the 3rds.
