NEW YORK ATHLETIC CUB 0 BARNSTONWORTH ROVERS F.C. 1
The firsts reached the top of the league table by beating NYAC at Pelham for the first time, 1-0. Jordi's hustle created the lone strike that settled it. He started at the far sideline, chased the impossible, startling the NYAC keeper forcing an error, and finishing with ease. Rovers 1-0.
Ben kept the points with 3 point blank stops vs NYAC's stalwart wingman, Pilarski.
To boot, the Rovers had the luxury of playing on a beautiful pitch, with warm dressing rooms, towels and showers at Pelham.
Given the inability of the team to trian outdoors the entire month of February, it was a tactically and technically outstanding performance. The Rovers were extremely disciplined denying the spaces wide that is NYAC's usual hunting ground. Salvo, Georgie, Vidar, Kush, Colin (and Randi) superbly contained the back half. Then some quick combinations and some direct play allowed the Rovers to create several good chances that could have put the game away. The best fell to Pugli, who latched on a through ball, rounded the keeper and slotted the ball seemingly in the open net. A NYAC defender was able to stop the ball from crossing the line, only for Pugli to get the rebound but with his back to the goal, unable to nail it in.
Newboy Joe Germanese (x-Revs) also had a great chance in the first have after some neat passing and final touch from the industrious Andy left him alone in the box. Needing a third touch before firing the shot, it was well saved. Ajene came close after a terrific shimmy at the byline, Colin had a very good strike parried for a corner, and Jordi's powerful shot from inside the 18een went just over the bar.
NYAC really only threatened twice. Both times Ben responded. After an unnecessary foul in an area that is always dangerous for the Rovers, Patty misjudged the first bounce in the box, allowing the ball to find Pilarski. His point blank strike was parried, more incredibly, Ben saved the rebound strike from even closer range that fell to the same striker. Then midway through the 2nd half, NYAC put together their only organized foray, springing Pilarski on their right, again inside the Rover area. Again, he connected well but Ben once again was better, securing the brilliant start to the spring season.
