Stan Meilec Res 4 Barnstonworth Rovers Res 2
The Reserves title train derailed on Thursday night, when once again they faces a team laced with 1st team players. A depleted side, with Stav filling in as a central defender failed to contain the Meilec 1st team darty striker early on.
Broach dove to his lef to make a great save the first time he got through the defense, but a blown offside call, allowed the same striker to cut through the middle and find himself all alone, stride in and put the poles ahead. Reserves 0-1.
The Reserves are not top of the league for nothing, though. They responded immediately. Ron and Jefferson combined in the final third, but the end result was not up to par. Then Jefferson and Sammy attacked the right side, the latter beat the poles for speed and placed a perfect cross for Yannick to finish. Reserves 1-1.
It did not take long for Meilec to fashion another scoring opportunity. Their speed and quick 1-2's up top created time and space. And after a clearance failed their striker picked up the ball and was again alone to finish. Reserves 1-2.
With minutes to play in the half Broach pulled off another exceptional save to his left at the far post, but at a cost. He injured his shoulder and continued to play even though he could only lift it to shoulder height.
This came to haunt him. Long cross/shot swirled towards the Rover goal, Broach could not raise both hands and could only parry the ball, unfortunately not enough to stir it out of the net. Rovers 1-3.
Meilec feeling safe, retracted some of their first team. Well, the Reserves started to party on them. Quickly they pulled one back as Felix fed Yannick who notched his 2nd of the match. Reserves 2-3
Felix had a chance of his own to bring the Reserves all the way back, but the effort was saved. Ron had a fleeting sight of goal. As did Mat with an effort at the penalty spot.
As the poles saw the match slipping, back on came the 1st team strike force.
Jefferson was giving Meilec's defense fits. Unable to cope with his dribbling skills, the reverted to hacking. Stupidly, he retaliated and of course that is what the referee spotted. The red card followed effectively ending the Rovers' comeback, as the crafty poles fashioned another counter a few minutes from time. Reserves 2-4.
