BRFC o30's 2 Gottschee o30's 0

last week our squad of 23 looked like having 20 available which would be a nightmare for any coach...luckily this is NYC and Barnstonworth so it was down to 15 by kickoff......this week we only had 13 of the 23 available - next season i'm gonna push the CSL so we can have a squad of 30 players.
anyway - we played Gottschee - one of the shittiest teams ever...who somehow tied with Premier last week?
strolling and up 2-0 with 5 mins to go in the 1st half Danny Power for the 1st time in his illustrious career harshly got sent off...kinda ruined his nice header to put us up a goal - which was follwed by a beautiful 2nd goal from Martino....so roll on 2nd half and us with 10 good players and them with 10 twats and a wee guy who was pretty good....to cut it short - our 10 actual players were able to fart around with it..our goalie got cold and we ran out 2-0 winners...
long horrible way to go but if i was the rest of this league i wouldn't wanna face this desperate but capable side.
laters,
MacKinnon

Barnstonworth Rovers Thirds Match report, 3/28/10

FC NY Bravehearts (0) - Barnstonworth Rovers Thirds (2)

A journey to the end of the Earth, or Long Island rather, brought mid-table powerhouses together at what might well have been the largest pitch on our planet. One could transition from midfield to offense on this thing only to find you had to do it all over again.

The pitch played a bit strangely, and Rovers first, second, and fourth touches gifted plenty of possession to the opposition, who in their apparent youth, closed down well on the large ground. Rovers skill and experience were in evidence, though, and the opponent, FC NY Bravehearts, failed to squeak out anything resembling a threatening chance in the first half. Unfortunately, not too much was clicking for Rovers either with wing play failing to produce dangerous crosses, the usually dominant center midfield failing to settle and combine, and the front line neither attacking nor holding play up. One very good chance presented itself, but Mike Dirolf's lung-busting run from the right wing saw him blaze over on a slow volley.

At the start of the second half, Tommy Chenoweth started to destroy and distribute out of the middle and his accurate passes let Thomas Obaseki and Gustavo Garro pick apart the defense. A nice interchange set Sergio Restrepo loose on a late run, and his calm finish was unjustly called back for offsides. Not even close. But that signaled the beginning of the barrage--Brandon Rowley picked up the ball near the halfway line, fully juked and muscled past 3 defenders on his own, and struck early to beat the goalie near post--fantastic run. Soon after, Rowley would add a second, picking up the ball near the corner, making some space at a tough angle 28 yards out, and then struck a gorgeous, ever-so-slightly bloopie strike to the far upper corner, putting any comeback out of mind.

Squad: Pretty much everybody.

Musa Shannon Elected to VP of Liberian F.A. !

The Liberia Football Association (LFA) elections in March 2010 may be so far away, but others feel it is as well so closed.

Names and camps have emerged towards who becomes the next president of the local football house to revamp the dying trend of the game.

Quite recently in Monrovia, Musa Bility, former Monrovia Black Stars wonder kid, intelligently declared his intention to contest the FA elections as president.

But as the election spirit gathers in the and around the country, a few more former footballers are coming forth with the latest being Musa Shannon, a former Lone Star winger.

Liberiansoccer.com Roland Mulbah got up with Mr. Shannon at his home in Monrovia and asked why the former Lone Star prodigy feels when given the nod at the FA he can be an instant unifier between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the FA as well as the public.

“There is a perception among the public about the FA and analysts think that those in control are not performing in the interest of football. Some believe the current crisis between the LFA and the MYS is causing serious problem to the growth of football in Liberia.”

“But I say to you today that I am coming on board in the interest of football and will bring about processes that will see our players compete on the international scene again, and will also further partnership with the government through the MYS.”

Mr. Shannon noted that though the election is till some 11 months away, he is preparing earnestly but with caution and believes he’s the right person.

“I don’t want to blow my own trumpet, but my life style from my days with the national team of Liberia and others will speak for me.”

“Though the time is still far for the FA elections, it’s very significant for all Liberians who want to see Liberian football rejuvenate and be on par with other top rated countries in African and the world at large to part of the process”.

On the issue of the sponsorship of the national league, Musa Shannon bragged that he has International partners who are willing to lend a hand in the process and disclosed that some individuals have made eye-catching promises regarding the sponsorship of the national league.

“We’ve strategies to bring in sponsors for the league as well as television right. Teams will not themselves as mere participants, but as partners and will be able to gain something at the end”.

He empathize the condition the clubs undergo to participate in the league and pray that the situation would change after the lections.

“Our teams have suffered a lot and I think this is the time they reap what they’ve sowed over the years.

“We’ve partners who want to be of assistance to us in the process of making our league better to tempt foreign players and we’re also thinking of running a professional football in Liberia, but we must all be committed in the process. We also want to decentralize football so as to afford other kids outside Monrovia to be part of the process,” Shannon noted.

Background

Musa Shannon was born August 1, 1975 in Monrovia, Liberia. He left Liberia in 1990 due to the civil war for the United States of America where he earned a scholarship to attend Robert Morris University.

After a few years, he graduated with a degree in Business Administration and was inducted in Robert Morris University hall of fame.

He made his International debut for the senior national team of Liberia, Lone Star, and formed an integral part for the formidable “George Weah XI”.

Shannon scored his only International goal for the red, white and blue outfit, in 2001 in Accra when Liberia thrashed Ghana in the 2002 world cup qualifiers, but Liberia missed out on the prestigious jamboree just a point behind the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Shannon had served as International scout for First Wave Sports Marketing in the USA shortly after he retired from playing active soccer.

Currently, he’s the Administrator and President of premier side - Club Azziz Kara, one of the newly formed teams making headways in Liberian football.

Pundits of Liberian football are anxiously waiting for the March 2010 elections to elect the next president of the FA who will be tasked with the responsibility of taking the country’s football to another level.

Results: Firsts 3/14/10 vs N.Y.A.C. (a)

NEW YORK ATHLETIC CUB 0 BARNSTONWORTH ROVERS F.C. 1

The firsts reached the top of the league table by beating NYAC at Pelham for the first time, 1-0. Jordi's hustle created the lone strike that settled it. He started at the far sideline, chased the impossible, startling the NYAC keeper forcing an error, and finishing with ease. Rovers 1-0.
Ben kept the points with 3 point blank stops vs NYAC's stalwart wingman, Pilarski.
To boot, the Rovers had the luxury of playing on a beautiful pitch, with warm dressing rooms, towels and showers at Pelham.
Given the inability of the team to trian outdoors the entire month of February, it was a tactically and technically outstanding performance. The Rovers were extremely disciplined denying the spaces wide that is NYAC's usual hunting ground. Salvo, Georgie, Vidar, Kush, Colin (and Randi) superbly contained the back half. Then some quick combinations and some direct play allowed the Rovers to create several good chances that could have put the game away. The best fell to Pugli, who latched on a through ball, rounded the keeper and slotted the ball seemingly in the open net. A NYAC defender was able to stop the ball from crossing the line, only for Pugli to get the rebound but with his back to the goal, unable to nail it in.
Newboy Joe Germanese (x-Revs) also had a great chance in the first have after some neat passing and final touch from the industrious Andy left him alone in the box. Needing a third touch before firing the shot, it was well saved. Ajene came close after a terrific shimmy at the byline, Colin had a very good strike parried for a corner, and Jordi's powerful shot from inside the 18een went just over the bar.
NYAC really only threatened twice. Both times Ben responded. After an unnecessary foul in an area that is always dangerous for the Rovers, Patty misjudged the first bounce in the box, allowing the ball to find Pilarski. His point blank strike was parried, more incredibly, Ben saved the rebound strike from even closer range that fell to the same striker. Then midway through the 2nd half, NYAC put together their only organized foray, springing Pilarski on their right, again inside the Rover area. Again, he connected well but Ben once again was better, securing the brilliant start to the spring season.

Team: Ben Kartzman, Mark Kushemba, John Salvucci, George Tagaris, Vidar Ekehaug, Colin Marshall, Pat Brown, Ajene Green, Joe Germanese, Jordan Chirico, Andy Abramovits. Subs (all played) Stephen Pugliese, Randi Lee

Rovers ladies start Spring season with a spring in their step by Nicolas

Rover Ladies 1: 3 CPR Ladies White: 1

After a very very long winter break our ladies were finally returning to the field on Sunday in perfect soccer weather.

Rovers 1 took the field against CPR White at 9 am, welcoming back in its ranks Mary L, KG, Courtney and Lorena, all coming back from injury. With a good 70% of Rovers 1 players having attended practice last Tuesday (a historical record), we knew they were in it to win it. As to be expected with any first game of a new season, automatism took a little while to resurface and touches weren't always as clean as they could have been but the level was sufficient to ensure overall dominance of the game and good ball circulation. In the end, 3 goals by KG, Jen, and Liz ensured a well deserved 3-1 win, making it 24 out of 27 points on the whole season so far and a 4 points lead with 5 games to go… 5 games to go. 5 games to go…

Results: Reserves 3/21/10 vs Brooklyn Italians (a)

Brooklyn Italian Res 6 Barnstonworth Rovers Res 3

Despite facing the only team to have beaten the Rovers Reserves this season - in the cup - and despite facing similar conditions to that match - 1st teams off - the Reserves were completely unprepared for the encounter. Having not practiced, not played and arriving late to the pitch, the outcome was predictable. Additionally, several players failed to follow instructions on the pitch leading to 0-5 deficit in the interval. A couple of very good (1st team players) shredded the Reserve back line and exploited the spaces created by indiscipline wide and deep. The build up to several goals, were carbon copies. Quick turns in space in the middle, or individual errors, releasing the wings getting deep, ball played to unmarked men in the six for simple finishes.
When the Rovers threatened, they wasted simple tap-ins.
Simply embarrassed at half-time, the Reserves put a much better organized effort in the 2nd, and quickly pulled back to 2-5 vs a more Reserves Italian side, when Yannick tapped in a rebound and Felix slotted home. Quickly the Italians restored their top 11 and held the Rovers to the end. Despite created a slew of better chances, and Baskin netting the Rovers' third, the Reserves never rattled the Italian nerves by cutting the deficit to 2.
A terrible performance to a good team. Still the Reserves remain top, but will need to improve against chasing CPR this week.

Team: Mat Kapplan, Corey Dempsey, Zach Chandis, Randi Lee, Yuri Krym, Daniel Cardozo, Ron Baskin, Yannick James, Michael Martocci, Sam Minaya, Jepherson Vernaza. Subs (all played) Felix D'ambrose, Stavros Zomopoulos

Results: R2D1 3/21/10 vs Vendaval

R2D1: 1 Vendaval 2

Sunday was an emotional day for R2D2 as it was the last game of our captain Bridget, who is on her way this week to Chicago where we hear she has already found a team who will be lucky to have her. The scenery for the occasion was perfect as the view from the new "Bushwick inlet" field in Williamsburg is absolutely stunning. The field itself is pretty nice if a bit short and narrow, and if you ever play there, bring lots and lots of balls at the fences are extremely low…
Playing Vendaval, the no2 in the League, is always a challenge and doing it without any subs makes it even harder. A lot could be said about this game but we'll remember that R2 gave it all and move, fighting tooth and nails till the last second of the game and nearly, so very nearly stealing 2 points. For 65 minutes, thanks to an incredible performance by Emily in goal we not only held our won but had 2 very serious chances to score including a brilliant header from Mary H playing her first game as a striker (instead of defensive line). At 1-0 we got back in the game and a splendid collective action down the left side ended up with the perfect cross which Abbey volleyed in for a great equalization. Sadly though, with 10 minutes left a wave of attacks from a Vendaval team which was decided on not giving up any point got the best of our energy and a second goal was conceded just minutes from the end. Sometimes the manner counts more than the results and yesterday, Rovers 2 players all went home with a smile on their face and a tear in their eye.

We'll miss you Bridget.

Barnstonworth Rovers Thirds Match report, 3/21/10

Gotham Argo (3) - Barnstonworth Rovers Metro (3)

After a disappointing let up to end the Fall, Rovers Metro sit tied 4th with games in hand and two Spring matches against table topping Gotham Argo, the first of which opened the Spring session. Rovers could still potentially control their own destiny by winning out.

The match started evenly, both sides controlling some possession and neither side yielding to the physical/aerial duel. Not 15 minutes in, Rovers found their way to the lead following some deep penetration past the inner right thigh...erm, inner right sideline, and the ensuing cross from Gangly Mike Dirolf settled onto newlywed Dave Bernfeld's foot not 3 yards out, and sent into the old vidalia bag. 1-0 good guys.

Not satisfied with a marginal margin, Rovers were suddenly up 2-0 from a free kick-lob into the 6 yard soup by your truly, tussled with by Brandon Rowley, and eventually dropped onto the feet of Sergio "Am I Still Pretty?" Restrepo, also sent coolly into the opposition's net. A couple poor finishes from Gotham Argo later and halftime saw Rovers 2 to the good.

Rovers expected a spirited reply from undefeated Argo and that they got; it looked like a switch to 3 up front with 81 midfielders. Some extended pressure yielded a decent goal from a wilting defense and the lead was cut in half. Rovers countered well shortly, though, and excellent work up the left side released Gavin "Fame Remember My Name" Dick who slotted it home to restore the 2 goal margin. Surely Rovers were destined for three points on the day.

Eric Butte then made an appearance on the pitch from Godknowswhere. It was kind of like watching a black albatross land on broken mirror underneath a ladder.

Full throated Argo captain James latched onto a roller from 35 yards with a hopeful blast that took an agonizingly perfect deflection to turn into an inch-perfect diagonal pass to the lone Argo player in a forward position--an Argentinian fellow who missed the mandate about Argentinian players in NY--and the lead was back to one. Not long after, an Argo winger sent a cross into the box, off the side-hanging arm of a Rovers defender about 3 yards away. Clearly ball-to-hand. And for the first time all day, the referee stopped staring at players awaiting guidance from the inmates how to run the asylum, and made an uncharacteristically forceful gesture indicating penalty. A tame effort slipped under the distraught midriff of James "Roethelisberger was framed" Krapp, and the day would end with a point apiece. Definitely 2 points lost over respect gained.

Gotham Argo still look to run away with the league pending some unforeseen results, with 2nd place still a possibility.

Thirds: Krapp, Sarg, Jmo, Wino and Mackers; Tommy, Dick, Mikey and Bern; coach and Brandon.
Subs: Duca, Restrepo, Garro, Okey (all played) and Sholltrain (injury reserve).

Results: o30's Premier v Dinamo 3/14/10 by Kevin

BRFC Premier 4 Dynamo o30 1
Goals: Duane Pena 10', 30', 75' Nedgy Nazon 70'

Rovers avenged last year's semi final loss to Dinamo with a convincing victory up on Gun Hill Rd and a hattrick for Senor Pena to boot. Baskin was instrumental in the first two, releasing Duane who rode a tackle and finished easily for the first while on the second, it was Nedgy who found Duane after Ron played a looping thru ball. Dinamo made it 2-1 late in the first half and were piling on pressure before the halftime whistle blew.

The second half saw Rovers squander several gilt edged chances before a third from Nedgy sealed the deal and took the wind out of the Dinamo sails. And after missing a sitter in front of goal, Duane scored the much more difficult one a few minutes later to make it 4-1 to Premier.

Kevin, Roger, Kenton, Narces, Carl, Emman, Duane, Alex, Stav, Kendall, Maurice, Ron, Nedgy, Marlon, Robbie (coach, DNP)

Rovers Thirds in Barcelona

Rovers (from left to right):
Top: César 'Negro' González, Bruce 'Sholltrain' Sholl, Mackers and Felipe 'Gaylord' Rojo
Bottom: Jeremy 'Achilles' Brown, Juan 'coach' González Casares, Jeremy 'Vino' and Jason Moore.

On Mach 3rd, a group of Rovers Thirds traveled to Barcelona, Spain for a weekend of soccer and Eurotrash fun. Rovers played a friendly game against a local corporate team, which they won by an ample margin. Some highlights included the return of Brown to the pitch after a long injury, hat tricks by coach and Vino, Felips four or five goals and Sholltrain's indisputable MVP award.
