Barnstonworth Rovers Res 2 N.Y Greek American Atlas Res 1
The Reserves, with Alan sporting his goalkeeper gloves effectively clinched the first 1st Division title for the club. They beat the 2 time NY State Champions for the 2nd time this season, leaving them 9 points behind with 3 games to play. Only CPR Reserve can mathematically catch them (7 points behind) but only if they fail to win another match against the 3 of the worst teams in the league. Even then, the Reserves hold the tie-breakers against both rivals.
Congratulations Reserves for the historic achievement !
Fittingly, it was Baskin that scored the winner midway through the first half, with a typically clinical left foot finish. Ron was also one of the scorers last time the club celebrated a championship - the 2nd Division title and promotion in May 2001 !
Rovers 1-0.
The Reserves played controlled and protected Alan, their volunteer goalkeeper, although, he stood tall every time asked. He made a particularly good stop early in the 2nd half parrying the ball over the bar.
Felix was exceptional in the unfamiliar centre back slot, until he succumbed to injury, second with a rare Chandis appearance.
The cause was aided by the Greeks who were facing similar goalkeeping issues, forcing them also to protect their rear.
The Rovers continued to create chances, and spurn them. Wiggi had one insdie the box,. Lucas threaded Yannick though facing the keeper but was blocked when trying to turn inside. He skied the next effort.
It took Baskin to hit the net again. With 15 minutes to go, he connected with another close range effort to seal the 3 points and, in all intense and purpose the first divisional Rover championship ! Rovers 2-0.
The opponents gave the Reserves a scare when the pulled one back in the dying minutes, but there was not time for much else.

Premier Derby vs Barnstonworth Ole Boys.4/27 - by Robbie
BRFC o30 Premier 2 BRFC Old Boys 0
Great game last night, great team effort. We really dominated and was very effective with the short passes...great contribution once again. Negdy did not find the back of the net, but he assisted both Alex and Duane goals. The midfield was solid with Allen, Stavros and Marlon sharing duties and keeping the ball on the ground and short passes flowing. The defense was solid as usual and Emmon was great in goal. The pace of the game was faster because 80% of the team was given a break at some point in the game to recover. Nedgy hustled in front as our first defender and with help from the midfield we forced a couple turnovers.... we really played as a unit last night. Sunday we play Tersoro @ 10 AM at Rangels Island.

Match Report 4/25 o30's vs Old Boys - by Sheero
A very generous report from Ben below… from this point of view, the Rovers O30s simply wanted the 3 points more. A disappointing conclusion given the Old Boys bottom-of-the-table predicament. We still have games in hand to make up the deficit, but the games are fast running out and not about to get any easier. If players can’t sufficiently motivate themselves for a 6-pointer derby, then it’s tough to see where the next points are coming from. The next test is another derby match against Rovers Premier at Pier40 on Tuesday evening.
Truly without taking anything away from the O30s – whose desire to win the game was undoubtedly the difference today, they hustled and chased the entire 90 minutes - the Old Boys were certainly hurting from several significant absences, be they through injury, different priorities and simple no-shows. Be that as it may, there were too many instances where the Old Boys allowed the O30s to dictate the game. As I said, very disappointing.
Oh and Ben, your counting is a little off… the O30s went 3-2 up before Colin’s beautifully floated equalizer. Jason’s winner soon followed.
But as you say, a game played superbly in the Rover spirit on awful conditions. It’ll take some extraordinary circumstances for us to meet again next season.
DAS.

Match Report 4/25 o30's vs Old Boys - by Ben Weiner
Rovers Old Boys 3 Rovers o30 4
Two squads of old men from the Barnstonworth Football Club squared off in the pouring rain on Randalls Island this morning. The Old Boys and the O-30's battled in classic fashion as the scoreline see-sawed back and forth throughout the game. There are probably not two more well matched teams in the whole league. It was an important match for both teams as we struggled our ways up from the bottom of the table. Yet one team had to triumph and today lady luck was with the O-30's.
Both teams had a penalty kick, both teams scored on a header, and it was only a matter of when the whistle blew that would determine the winner. O-30 went up first on a Martino penalty that Sheero got his mitt on but still deflected into the right netting. The Old Boys were quick to respond with a nice run down the left flank ending in a loft to a far corner header that caught Pat Wisnom (kindly sitting in as back up keeper) off guard. The Boys then proceeded to put us back on our heels before the half on an unfortunate hand ball in the box, giving them the easy penalty. 2-1. The wind seemed behind their backs for a time as they continued to hound our defensive third. Halftime came as welcome relief.
The second half opened with both squads chewing at the bit but not getting any traction. The defense of both teams held attacks at bay, not allowing penetrations. Then Aidan dropped in behind on the right flank and popped in a lovely soft cross that found Ben at the 6 yard line reaching the header a split second before Sheero could punch it out. 2-2. Old Boys were not to be stopped and one of them launched a well-driven shot from the 30 yard line that found our back-up keeper wishing he had remembered where his line was as it slotted under the bar. 3-2. Martino slammed home number 2 for the day after an Un-mackers cross and side step pass from Ben left him open in the box. 3-3. Then the final nail came from Jason on a header at the back post - another perfect cross from Un-Mackers (?) 4-3. We held on in the final minutes praying for the whistle.....
A relatively well-reffed game and ,as always, a gentlemanly battle of intra-club squads. Well done to both.

Results: Firsts 4/22/10 vs Stan Meilec (A)
Stan Meilec 1 Barnstonworth Rovers 1
McCarren Park Thursday night matches have not been the Rovers best venue. But playing relegation threatened albeit much improved Stan Meilec, they would have marked 3 points in their schedule. In a match that mirrored the Rovers - Croatia encounter the Firsts dominated proceedings but simply could not find break the game. Their effort, desire and work rate improved and the Rovers clearly deserved the 3 points. In a first half that saw the ball only reach the Rovers 18een twice, the interval found them trialing 1-0.
Stan Meilec's forward latched on a through ball down the middle of the Rover centre backs, and he raced on to beat Ben for the surprise scoreline. Rovers 0-1.
This time tough the Rovers determination paid off within 5 minutes of the restart. Jordi his a bullet direct free kick through the wall and to the bottom corner past the sprawling pole keeper. Rovers 1-1.
It,again, seemed inevitable the Rovers would go on and win it. They created chances, a far post Pugli try, Ajene from inside the 18een and Colin's effort that was very well parried. Jordi broke through on the right and he blasted it at the near post only for the effort to be saved. The Rovers poured men forward as Meilec tired, constantly overlapping and getting deep, but the finish eluded them. The final whistle saw the Rovers drop another unexpected 2 points.
Team: Ben Kartzman, Oren Nhaissi, John Salvucci, Vidar Ekehaug , Andy Abramovits, Ajene Green, George Tagaris, Colin Marshall, Corey Dempsey, Jordan Chirico, Stephen Pugliese Subs (all played) Sam Minaya, Yannick James, Joe Germanese. Dave Borchard, Lucas Wierthein

Results: Reserves 4/15/10 vs Stan Meilec Res (A)
Stan Meilec Res 4 Barnstonworth Rovers Res 2
The Reserves title train derailed on Thursday night, when once again they faces a team laced with 1st team players. A depleted side, with Stav filling in as a central defender failed to contain the Meilec 1st team darty striker early on.
Broach dove to his lef to make a great save the first time he got through the defense, but a blown offside call, allowed the same striker to cut through the middle and find himself all alone, stride in and put the poles ahead. Reserves 0-1.
The Reserves are not top of the league for nothing, though. They responded immediately. Ron and Jefferson combined in the final third, but the end result was not up to par. Then Jefferson and Sammy attacked the right side, the latter beat the poles for speed and placed a perfect cross for Yannick to finish. Reserves 1-1.
It did not take long for Meilec to fashion another scoring opportunity. Their speed and quick 1-2's up top created time and space. And after a clearance failed their striker picked up the ball and was again alone to finish. Reserves 1-2.
With minutes to play in the half Broach pulled off another exceptional save to his left at the far post, but at a cost. He injured his shoulder and continued to play even though he could only lift it to shoulder height.
This came to haunt him. Long cross/shot swirled towards the Rover goal, Broach could not raise both hands and could only parry the ball, unfortunately not enough to stir it out of the net. Rovers 1-3.
Meilec feeling safe, retracted some of their first team. Well, the Reserves started to party on them. Quickly they pulled one back as Felix fed Yannick who notched his 2nd of the match. Reserves 2-3
Felix had a chance of his own to bring the Reserves all the way back, but the effort was saved. Ron had a fleeting sight of goal. As did Mat with an effort at the penalty spot.
As the poles saw the match slipping, back on came the 1st team strike force.
Jefferson was giving Meilec's defense fits. Unable to cope with his dribbling skills, the reverted to hacking. Stupidly, he retaliated and of course that is what the referee spotted. The red card followed effectively ending the Rovers' comeback, as the crafty poles fashioned another counter a few minutes from time. Reserves 2-4.
Team: Dave Borchard, Stefan Lysak, Felix D'ambrose, Daniel Cardozo, Stavros Zomopoulos, Yuri Krym, Bond Griffin, Lucas Werthein, Yannick James, Oren Nhaissi, Samuel Minaya, Subs (all played) Michael Martocci, Ron Baskin, ,Jepherson Vernaza, Mat Levine Sam had one facing the keeper

Results: Firsts 4/18/10 vs Croatia (H)
Barnstonworth Rovers 0 N.Y. Croatia 1
The Rovers 5 game winning streak ended with the same 1-0 scoreline in reverse. It cost the Rovers the top spot in the division. Nothing before or during the first 80 minutes of the match hinted that this upset was in the cards.
The Firsts dominated from kick off, and should have opened the score early on when Pugli connected with a Jordi cross inside the six. Andy found Pugli again in the box minutes later but the finish went awry.
In the 25th minute the game changed. Jordi broke through the Croatian defense and was tackled by the goalkeeper on the top of the D and as he tried to round him. Obvious straight red and a direct free kick for the Rovers.
Croatia continued with a Reserve keeper and 10 men. Somehow the Rovers could not capitalize, highlighting their recent finishing woes. They dominated 90% of the possession as Croatia retreated with 9 players in their own half, often 8 sitting in their 18een, but they could not fashion a breakthrough. Andy hit the post when Pugli's finish went past the far upright. And Colin's direct free came close but went over the bar. But the Rovers never really tested the back up keeper. They got stuck trying to play short balls in the Croatian final third and could not draw out the disciplined Croatian defenders.
With 10 minutes to go, and with Rover frustration clearly growing, the unthinkable happened. A clearance found the back of the sole Croatian in the Rovers' half, and it fell to another midfielder in the centre circle. He raced through 3 Rovers and hit a thunder to the near upper 90. Rovers stunned at 0-1. Croatia had scored without ever having 2 players in the Rover half !
The urgency upped, but Rovers could not reverse their fate.
Team: Ben Kartzman, Mark Kushemba, John Salvucci, Andy Abramovits, Ajene Green, George Tagaris, Colin Marshall, Scot Waddell, Pat Brown, Jordan Chirico, Stephen Pugliese Subs (all played) Alan Alcade, Vidar Ekehaug, Randi Lee, Joe Germanese, Dave Borchard

Premier Match Report 4/18 vs BW Gottchee o30 - by Robbie
BRFC o30 Premier 1 BW Gottchee o30 1
The game Sunday was a dog fight. We did not have our full squad, but still, those who showed up played with heart. At the end of the day we cannot turn back the clock , the score is the score, it is what it is. We have to be on the same page at all times, with 5 minutes to go, we had to get more compact as a unit and defend the lead. We failed to score in 75 minutes, with 5 minutes to go we should have all fall back behind the ball. Maurice played in pain and after each tackle you could see it in his face grimaced in pain. He tackled won balls and could not even run with the ball, he in turn had to kick the ball to the sideline. Roger, still nursing his foot injury, was dressed as a Keeper and placed in the goal. He made two great saves and the defense play really hard to ensure no shots on him.
Yes we earn a draw against Gottschee, but we were forced to play within the confines of what was available. The referee was bad, we fought a good fight and avoided any serious injury. That was our last draw, we have to beat Tersoro and Greek Americans to qualify for the playoffs. We play Tersoro on Sunday.

Results: Firsts 3/28/10 vs CPR
Central Park Rangers 0 Barnstonworth Rovers F.C. 1
The third 1-nil away win in a row ushered the Rovers to the top of the table last weekend. Andy latched on a Pugli backheer ran through the CPR defense and finished brilliantly to the far post for the game winner.
Again, though, the match story was the impressive Rover team defense. From the strikers to the goalkeeper, the Rovers closed gaps, cut the space and struggled the State Cup finalist CPR.
As it has been typical in these local derbies, after weathering the early CPR dominance where they squandered a good chance from inside the box, the Rovers settled and thought they had taken the lead when Pugli broke the offside trap only for the completely inadequate linesman to raise his flag before he could finish. And then, the Rovers moved to dominate possession as well as chances. Andy had a good strike from the left and Ajene cut and shot was well saved.
15 mins into the 2nd half, the inadequate linesman made amends for his comical officiating that included the Reserve game. The CPR forward darted through the gap between 2 Rover central defenders and slotted past Ben but, for once, the Rovers got the offside call. The Rovers lacked the central midfield mastery that has trademarked them this season, but Scotty, back from his A-league adventure, provided the spark they needed in the flanks with a super 2nd half. In the 70th, the Rovers created the one piece of brilliance that settled the match. Ben's quick release started up the Rover left, to Colin who fed Pugli. Pugli shielded the ball from 2 defenders and back healed it to Andy running through in support. With a burst of speed, Andy got behind the CPR defense, he held off the challenge and powerfully finished to the lower far post of the onrushing keeper. Rovers 1-0
This was all Ben needed, recording his 4th clean sheet of the season and 3rd in a row for the Rovers (all away !). He made another superb save from close range, and survived a bit of craziness with Sammie clearing the ball for a corner in the dying seconds when Ben had already called him off.
Rovers top of the league. Next up Croatia at home.
Team: Ben Kartzman, Alan Alcade, Oren Nhaissi, Pat Brown, George Tagaris, Vidar Ekehaug, Colin Marshall, Scott Waddell, Ajene Green, Andy Abramovits, Stephen Pugliese. Subs (all played) Yuri Krym, Sam Minaya, Yannick James

The Reserves had 2 points stolen from them when a well executed attack down the right flank was finished with aplomb with 2 minutes remaining in the match, only to have the goal disallowed, why exactly nobody is certain, at least 5 seconds after the ball hit the net. The best explanation the incompetent ref could furnish was that he called an offside at the start of the move, because no advantage was gained !
And although the Reserves played the first 30 minutes with 10 men, they thoroughly deserved all 3 points. CPR scored on 2 penalties (!), at least one was a ridiculous decision. They only created one other chance - they should have scored - in the entire match. Contrarily, even with 10 men, the Rovers played smart and cohesively. And, whenever that failed, Kaplan stood tall to clean up. Yannick had a good chance to open the scoring and put the Rovers ahead with 10, but it went just over the bar.
Instead CPR broke the deadlock with their 1st penalty, when Oren was elbowed in the face, but a penalty was awarded ! Kaplan got his palms to it but just failed to keep it out. Reserves 0-1
Oren (who played 145 min) recovered and dominated the right flank. And when the Rovers got 11 on the pitch took control.
10 mins in the 2nd half, Stavros tied the match with a 30 yard strike to the top right corner, the keeper did not thing would get there. Rovers 1-1.
And when Sammie timely run onto a long through ball, he fed Felix inside the six who had no problem giving the Rovers the lead. Reserves 2-1.
CPR responded with their only spell of pressure but when their NFL forward missed a sitter with 5 mins to go, the points seemed to be settled. That was only until the ref decided to award another penalty when Yuri sort of obstructed the fall of a CPR diver. Kaplan again got a hand to it, but to no avail. Rovers 2-2.
Still there was time for some late Rover magic, Oren took his space and lead Sammie down the wing. Sammie got the ball (later to be called offside) beat his marker to the end line, crossed to the far post past Baskin to Felix who thought he had the game winner. The ref, to everyone's, including CPR players' amazement, did not think so. Not to worry though, CPR got their dose of his medicine in the 1st team match.

BRFC o-30's 4/11/10 vs Eintracht by Ben Weiner
Eintracht o30 2 BRFC o30's 3
The o-30 squad has come back to life in the second half of the season. Our need for wins to avoid relegation has so far been met by the scrappy squad of old men. Eintracht put up their usual hard battle even as we went ahead 2-0 (Martino, Alexander). They pushed back and made it 2-2 by halftime. The second half opened with heavy pressure and it was not looking good for the Rovers. Pulling together we managed a third goal to unMackers towards the end of the match. It was a deserved 3-2 win and extremely helpful win to move us out of relegation danger.
Now the final relegation battle begins in 2 weeks against the old boyz. We will miss playing against Greg and his honest adept defense yet hope to see him back on the field next season.

Premier Match Report 4/11 vs Pele Masters by Kevin
BRFC Premier o30's 3 Pele Masters 3
Goals: Duane Pena 10', 90' Marlon Johnson 85'
Rovers took the lead early doors after and controlled the match for long periods in the first half. It was Duane who scored first after his patented left sided run, he cut inside and hit a strike to the far post. We were unfortunate to not have more goals in the first half as Nedgy's 2 clear chances were denied and Marlon's excellent strike went just outside the post.
In the 2nd half, Pele pulled a typical Pele Masters comeback and re-took the lead over a period of twenty minutes. On their first goal, a thru ball came across, got tapped on to another striker who appeared offside but to no avail. 1-1. The second goal was a rocket of a strike that hit Carl on the shoulder, wrong-footing Kevin. Still reeling, we gave up a third in short order and all seemed lost. 3-1 to Pele.
We threw caution to the wind and ended up pulling a Pele Masters of our own. After Carl came close pinging a Tito cross off the crossbar, it was Marlon who got our second after receiving a cross from Kendall. Marlon controlled, shifted the ball to his left and calmly scored from the edge of the 6 yd box. And finally, it was Duane who got what sure felt like a winner when Nedgy's free kick curled into box. Carl flicked the header on to the near post where Duane tapped home from close range. Level terms at 3-3. With 1 minute left, they started to come forward and before the ref could blow for full time, tempers flared, some histrionics ensued and that was that.

Barnstonworth Rovers Thirds Match report, 4/11/10
Maltese Dolphins (1) - Barnstonworth Rovers Thirds (3)
Third and Fourth place sides meet to establish who will contend with the top two glory and riches beyond our wildest desires. Or a plastic trophy type arrangement and probably a free round of beer. It's gotta be something really cool to win the league.
A return to Randall's a morning games was as welcome as the exquisite weather--no matter the result, a day of sunning at McAleer's was assured for all but a few lame-asses, like Gavin in particular. Ahem.
Full credit to the Dolphins, who looked a more capable side than during the league opener, and the first twenty minutes had Rovers on the back foot, with Mike Dirolf apparently the only Rover ready to play at the whistle. Their through balls consistently found a willing Krapp scooping them up, but corners were not defended well and some pinball and a crossbar bounce later, the deadlock remained. I think that's what happened, anyway--my vision still blurred from taking a deflection in the gents.
Rovers first effective counter would expose the advanced Dolphins midfield, however, and an excellent ball from Garro to Gavin, saw him release Restrepo for a well-taken finish: 1-0.
The second half saw Rovers start confused--the kickoff was calmly played forward, but a mixup between Mackers and Derek saw the ball tinkle to the lone striker, who finished well in the far side-netting to even the score. Soft stuff. Rovers redoubled their efforts, though, and a clumsy challenge would grant Rovers a free kick just outside the 18 yard box. The confused goalie could and would do little to stop Garro's quick curler over the wall, restoring the lead. Dolphins would press, but some some excellent passing saw Obudulu lay off to the characteristically active Dirolf, who upon beating his man on the baseline, played a good ball to the top of the 18, where a willing Obaseki expertly one-timed it home. The result all but assured, both sides would coast in the final 15.
Squad:
Almost everybody but Moore, Duca, Bernfeld, and Rowley.
